LCS
became involved with Union Carbide in August of 1995 when
they were hired to do various studies which included an economical
feasibility study of an existing facility remodel. The outcome
of this study lead the owners to choose to build a new 17,000
square foot facility that includes 10,000 square feet of laboratory
space, a 5,000 square foot office and 2,000 feet of lab space.
The owner provided LCS with a preliminary schematic design
and Union Carbides standard specifications. LCS competitively
bid the design completion and construction of this facility
allowing Union Carbide to work with the team they knew and
trusted from start to finish.
Many significant challenges were overcome to complete this
project on time and within budget. LCS found several unknown
obstructions underground which created a requirement to change
the structural design of the underground building support
system. Other obstructions included various pipelines; some
of which were no longer in service. Through meticulous excavation
these were safely unearthed and capped. A four year commitment
and the expertise of the LCS team, which comes from years
of designing, building and supporting labs of all types, enabled
these kinds of difficulties to be overcome. The successful
completion of this facility enabled Union Carbide to combine
separate lab facilities into one facility increasing both
efficiency and performance.
