Jordan, a land developer of College Station, Texas, had plans
to build a 60,000 square foot facility for a prospective tenant.
Prodigene, a company that experiments with genetic engineering
of plant life and animal proteins, was to occupy an 18,000
square foot facility, including 10,000 square feet of laboratory
space. The design team, which included LCS, the land developers,
architects, and executives from Prodigene, was able to optimize
a laboratory design that more than satisfied the needs of
everyone involved.
The timing on this project was crucial. Because of this, LCS
had only three weeks to install 500 linear feet of casework,
countertops, upright shelving and all associated plumbing.
Once again, the expertise of the LCS team that comes from
years of designing, building and supporting labs of all types
meant that the laboratory systems were delivered on time and
within budget.
Another interesting aspect of this facility included the indoor
greenhouse. The greenhouse contains elaborate lighting housed
within huge stainless steel trays that allow this laboratory
to mock daylight within the building at all times. This allows
Prodigene to grow genetically engineered corn stalks up to
ten feet tall. Vegetable oil is then extracted from the corn
to replace animal fat that is used in pharmaceutical studies.
