the
chemical, plastics, detergent, textile, high-tech, personal
care, rubber and packaging industries. Originally known for
pioneering innovations in packaging, and later, rapid and
integrated growth in petrochemicals, Huntsman-held companies
today have revenues in excess of $4 billion from multiple
locations worldwide.
Project Overview
When Huntsman elected to consolidate their research and development
facilities from around the nation to The Woodlands, they elected
to bring LCS Constructors on board as their laboratory planner,
consultant, and critical systems construction resource.
The
project posed significant challenges, which LCS identified
and planned for well in advance of groundbreaking. The initial
pre-construction phase of the project spanned three months
and included intensive programming meetings with lab users,
management, and information technology.
The
resulting complex contains one fully renovated existing building
and two new buildings, plus a major central plant building
to support over 175,000 sf of laboratory and office space.
Part of the facility is used for high pressure blast cell
research which was built within a blast resistent environment.
As envisioned, the new campus provides state-of-the-art open
concept laboratories, ergonomic features for the employees,
meeting rooms for customers, and an abundance of natural light
pouring into the spaces.
Special features included:
- Three
custom built super structure fume hoods, including a two-story
structure with catwalk to conduct distillation research.
- 6,500
lf of laboratory casework, 145 fume hoods, 32,000 lf distributed
piping for laboratory bench and fume hood fixtures
- Centralized
nitrogen system throughout laboratories eliminating the
need to transport nitrogen cylinders and improved safety.
- Type
I Di water system throughout laboratories providing maximum
water quality to sinks and equipment.
